Every year some 2% of the estate's seedling tea is removed and replanted with higher yielding better quality superior cultivar varieties. These plant varieties produce higher yields and better quality tea, and are unusually high in health promoting anti oxidants.

Lujeri currently has 1115 hectares of superior cultivar tea which contributes significantly to its reputation as a quality tea producer.

Irrigation

Tea is a seasonal crop, with 70% of production being harvested in the five months of December to April. Irrigated areas produce tea all year round, extending this season to months when made tea is scarce in Malawi. Continued expansion of irrigated areas and consolidation of scarce water supplies will ensure continued increased production.
